: My vet recommended soaking in a warm bath of water and novalsan. Can I use it at 100% and just squirt it on? Where can I get Merthiolate, and is it better than Novalsan? Can I use both? His hoof is trimmed and supported with a special shoe, there is a void where you can see daylight. Should we pack it with cotton soaked in something? Looking for any ideas on best way to treat this stuff.
: Thanks for any feedback!
The hardest thing to do is what I've found is the best thing for anytype of fungus,WLD, or plane old thrush. I soak in a mixture of warm water mixed with 50%bleach. 20 minutes worth of soaking followed by drying on a clean flat concrete or asphalt. Then I bed the stall or recommend the owner to keep it as clean as possible. I then take an old pair of mens socks and fold one into a square and place it into the toe of the other sock. Then onto the bad foot it goes with the squared sock flat on the bottom of the foot. Duct tape the outside of the hoof and trim off the excess sock. Keep the stall as DRY as possible for 7-10 days then remove the tape and socks. Most likely the bottoms will be worn but should stay dry. The hoof at this point should be good and hard if you kept the urine from getting into the area. At this time it's into a clean grass pasture or a dry lot without mud. The key is keeping it dry! The sock inside the sock will help absorb the sweat from the bottom of the hoof and of course the duct tape should help keep out the urine. Works for most of the cases of this description for me. Good Luck! Gary
