: we are looking at a horse to purchase and her rear hoof go almost straight down. at a trot, when she moves, she walks/trots on her rear toes. what is this and what are the long term implications? can it be corrected with special shoes? the horse displays no signs of discomfort/lameness. current owners either have not noticed condition (she has been out to pasture for months) or aren't telling. help!

Hi Cindy,

This sounds like something that would 'fail' a horse on a pre-purchase exam..... you might save yourself the expense and find a horse with no apparent lamenesses....and then have him or her examined just to be sure

the condition you describe is NOT normal and will eventually lead to problems

hope this helps

Derin
