: : My horse constantly throws his shoes, I can never keep him on a regular schedule because he throws his shoes so often. He is an Appaloosa with white feet. I don't know if this has anything to do with his hoof problems because I have been told both ways. I have also been told that he has abscesses inside his hooves and it was because somewhere along in his life he had shots in his legs. It has been suggested that I take his shoes off in the winter, but everytime he throws a shoe, his foot just about crumbles to pieces so I am very weary about doing so. I don't know what to do to help him. He is on suppliments, and I have had problems with his feet for the last 3 years, (every since I have owned him). I am not sure what to do. I have tried everything from not letting him outside for a long period of time and changing him to egg bars. Please help me.
: Might just be that your horse is not balanced correctly when shod. Does your horse live in a stall most of the time? Does he overreach when walking or being rode? Does he paw the ground and dig holes or paw fences or anything that he could hang a shoe on? Does your farrier take his time and is he aware of the problem with your horse? If any of the answers to these questions is yes then eggbars are going to be ripped off your horse pretty quick! Just a few questions to wonder about! Good Luck! Gary
Why did you try eggbars? Does he have some other soundness probelem? Especially if he is turned out eggbars can be difficult to keep on. What does his hoof look like? Is it dry and flakey, or look like a normal hoof? When he mooves how do the feet track under the horse, how do they land? Like Gary suggests I would start with making sure he is in correct balance. Is it always the same hoof? What is the horse used for? What kind of shots in his legs? Pinfiring or joint injections?
