: : Mata, I believe the answer needs a question first. If your horse is 6 yrs old, not broken to ride, and kept in a stall, has small feet, why do you have shoes on this horse? Before your original question can be properly and politely answered, this information and the rationale behind it would help the respondents. Hopefully, we can help you. Jack Hammonds
: Fair enough - he's broken to harness, and I am breaking him to ride myself. Currently I'm lungeing him and walking him on the trails, prior to backing ina month or less if all goes well. When all his shoes were removed for the vet's inspection he was of course very very sore, even on soft bedding.
: Should I consider setting back his training and going without shoes? He went a week recently with one shoe missing because the farrier couldn't make it out, and he was lame the entire week. How long would it take before the sore feet feel better in that case? In any event I will want to train him to jump etc, and eventually will need to keep shoes on him, somehow, for traction.
: He's kept in a stall because the turnout pasture is fenced in looses, rusty barbed wire at the ranch I board at, which I think is dangerous, and the other horses in turnout are bullies.
Mata,
It would bother me as the owner or the farrier if the horse was "very, very sore, even on soft bedding" after removing the shoes....I would be looking for underlying problems before continuing this horse's training.....radiographs would show depth of sole and any rotation present
