: : I recently purchased my first Tennessee Walker. He was a former show horse and now I use him strictly for trail riding. I would like to know more about having him shod..when I first got him his front feet were very overgrown and he stumbled frequently. Doing much better now on the trail but just want to understand his shoeing needs better. Thanks.
: Review the past post, there are a couple about shoeing former show horses. Usually a NB trim is suggested. The show folks are in a different world, they shoe for effect nothing else.

All the Walkers I shoe are flat shod or lite shod. They might come in with buildups but the lady I work for every Wed. wants them flat shod. I do leave them at 3 3/4 to 4 inch up front and around 3 1/2 behind. The Trainer wants them like that so they still gait. Too many come in with too small shoes and way too short toes. The Walkers do move differant than Quarters, the owners ask us to get them to gait again. A good trainer that knows Walkers is a great asset to a farrier because he knows how they move and what their needs are. Hope this helps? Gary
