: : I have been advised venice turpentine on soles is good for hardening/toughening up soles..my TB seeems to get stone bruises often! well, what's the "other turpentine" for? only for disinfecting for thrush, quick nails etc? little confused which to apply daily!

: Regular turpentine is a solvent, never for use on horses hooves. Patty

Ok , I realized I may have jumped to a conclusion just based on what I was taught all theses years without really looking deeper so I decided to look up "Turpentine" in an online dictionary/encyclopedia. From "HyperDictionary.com, (paraphrased):
There are mamny varieties of turpentine depending on the variety of the tree it is obtained from. Venice,Swiss or Larch comes from the tree 'Larix Europae, and tends to solidify, that is why it is sticky.
'Carolina turpentine' comes from the long leaf pine and is the more abundant variety.
Anyway, mia culpa because "Oil of Turpentine" is obtained by distilling crude turpemntine and according to that dictionary it is used in making varnish AND in medicine. The site doesn't say exactly HOW it is used in medicine. So I guess it sure won't hurt a hoof, although the distilled variety wonlt stick as well as the Venice variety. Go ahead, spank me.
Patty
