: Katy, thanks for the encouragement. I am getting advice from a good vet and farrier. The mare is so lame right now I was wondering how she could ever come out of it. She is even too sore for shoes and we are just using a glued-on pad on the laminitic foot. The vet and farrier tried all kinds of shoes but they made her even worse. How long did you treat your horse?
Malinda,
She foundered 3X. Last time she did not stand for 5 days, did not walk and was down most of the time for a couple months. I was really having to consider ending her suffering. Her daughter foundered the last time along with her, so I had two down at the same time. Finally figured out what was wrong, got better vet, better farrier. They are both insulin resistant, and my premium brome grass and hay were way too high in sugar. Now she's been fine for a couple years and is sound in full work, galloping on bad footing. I tried all the foot options, but the EDSS system, with Gene Ovencik himself putting them on, to be the best. She's still in a simpler version, Natural Balance shoes and pads. I had to learn a lot, and I'd say I'm still treating her, and will continue to treat her for the rest of her and her daughters life. Her feet are looking great, and I hope to be able to let her go barefoot this winter. It's a long story. I have a website about it. www.safergrass.org
