: Hey all..

: I just have a question. I want to know if a backwards shoe would have the same effect as eggbars do for a severely foundered horse?? The horse rotated 15 & 20º. She's in egg bars right now. I'm just curious is all, really. Any comments? Thanks!

Neither one is especially good for a foundered foot, because they load the wall and offer o support to the cofin bone unless they are filled with some support material. The EGG bar is the absolute worst because it will load the hoofwall all around the foot, including the toe, and then without bone support up through the frog, the coffin bone can drop right down through the middle.
At least he backward shoe (IF it is applied correctly) will offer ease of breakover and relieve the hoofwall at the toe.
You need a vet and farrier who understands the mechanics of derotating the foot(geting the hoofwall trimmed around the bone) and knows how to properly support the rear of the foot while relieving the toe. If either the vet or farrier is sugggesting egg bars for a foundered horse, you need to replace them . There are other far more effective ways to shoe a horse for laminitis which will realign the foot and support it accurately and properly. Improper shoeing is as is what fuels the 'barefoot' approachm which thousgh SOMETIMES appropriate in SOME cases is not always in the best interest of the horse either.
And now I am going to be blunt. A resection is not that expensive compared to the recovery of your horse. If the old dead hoofwall is shrinking in on and impinging on the new which is trying to grow in at the coronary band,(a "laminellar wedge" and it is not relieved *at the correct time*, it may be the deciding factor if your horse recovers or not. Doing a resection too soon, or too late can ruin the horse's chances for recovery. Timing is everything in success of restctions and you cannot wait until later if he needs one now. Patty
