: : Thanks V.much for replying. There has always been good hoof growth & my farrier does not take the sole away. Currently Oscar has nothing on his feet other than the steel NBS & he seems to get an increase in pulse leading to a laminitis attack about once a year at most. My farrier is trimming & resetting about once every 5-6 weeks, I'm sure my pony is wearing 41/2 inch shoes (he's 13.3hh). I just wondered whether he'd be better with one of the new type devices along with the NBS?? As before, any advice greatly appreciated.
: Well, without some kind of frog, bars, etc support, there is a good chance that ther structures are somewhat prolapsed and contributing to the problem. Has any blood work been done to rule out Cushings, Insulin Resistance, etc?
: Have you discussed the problem with your vet, and if so, what is the advise? You might also consider giving the pony some bute the day before, day of, and day after the farrsier work. this will help to keep the ongoing sub-clinical inflammation and pain, sub-clinical. If you decide this might be worth trying, consult your vet for the correct dosages.

Anna,
The farrier can provide the frog and bar support rick spoke of either with the full EDSS or he can simply use the new (about a year old now) Natural Balance Frog pad and the natural balance impression material with the NB shoe he is using now. I usually start a new case out in the full EDSS. I reset the EDSS once or twice till the horse is more stable. Then I usually move him to a natural balance pad, impression material and NB shoes. The 2 settings of the EDSS allow me to determine if the horse will do better flat or with a wedge. The NB pad is available both flat and wedged.
Note: with a laminitic horse the impression material must not be allowed to extend forward of the widest part of the foot. If you go this route make sure your farrier views the EDSS application videos for information on where to cut out the impression material to avoid putting pressure on the bottom of P-3 (coffin bone)
