: : : Hi! I have a 16 yr old TB, who has navicular. He has horrible feet and can't keep shoes on for any length of time. Because of his navicular, the vets have said that we need to use wedges in his shoes..the only problem is he is out all day and only comes in at night (7-8 pm) and let back out very early in the morning (5-6 am). We have tried glue on shoes which only stay on for about 2 1/2 weeks. We have gone through many farriers because of his problems. Our new farrier said that we should not use wedges because then the mud is able to suction his shoes off easier. The only problem is then I can not ride. My horse, Tux, recieves hoof supplements and we apply dressings to his feet. What can we do to prevent him from losing his shoes so often? And, what type of shoe would work best for him, considering he has navicular? We have tried everything on the market! Please help!
: : Amy,
: : There are several shoes on the market for use on Navicular horses.....the GE-N is one that I have used with success. These shoes can and should be clipped especially if shoe loss is a problem.
: : What type of hoof dressing are you using?

: The GE Navicular shoe is my favorite as well, I have three horses going in them now that were unserviceable at all before and are now being ridden everyday, I don't care for wedges on navicualr horses because they sometimes add frog pressure and sensitivity to frog pressure is one of the clinical signs of navicular. clip the shoes (the aloy clips well) that should help with the loss problem.

Nine times out of ten, if you do not add some form of passive sole support, the caudal portion of the hoof, at a solar level, will prolapse down through the open center of the shoe and you will end up with more problems than you started with.
