: I need help in trimming my miniature horse properly. I have an experienced farrier but he is not accostomed to working with the mini. It seems that the mini's hooves are contracting. Help
Phyllis,
The same principles used in trimming horse feet apply to these little guys as well.....heels back to the widest part of the frog, proper breakover relative to the frog, and they have less tendency to flare so that is often not an issue.
Perhaps the minis hooves are contracting for some reason....if that's the case it needs to be addressed and corrected......most of these minis have very upright, narrow little feet and what you are seeing might be perfectly normal. Find a breeder or someone else familiar with them in the area and have them look at your mini. You might find that there is not a problem.
Good Luck
