: I have a 14 year old thoroughbred mare who has horrible hooves. When I bought her she had bondo on her hooves to fill in where she had no hoof. After seeing what a mess her feet were, and changing farriers, we decided to use farrier's formula, tuff stuff and go as long as possible between shoeing(to let her hooves grow). Now I am having a hard time keeping shoes on. Her hooves are very soft and moist and pieces are falling off. I have been riding her more now than in the winter, her feet are growing faster, but they don't seem to be getting any better. (this has been going on for 8 months) It has been suggested we take her shoes off and let everything grow out. I was told this could take a long time and I would not be able to ride her. She is the type of horse who loves to get ridden and needs to be ridden. I am in the northeast and the weather has been very unstable with alot of rain. I know standing out in the wet mud is bad for her feet, but I also know she cannot be in a stall all day. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
