: I have a 9 yr old QH & 11 yr QH/Arab. I live in N Idaho. Every year their feet get very dry, they crack, their soles/frogs get really dry. I feed them Biotein, I have them stand in wet area while feeding. I have been applying hoof dressing too. I do not know what else to do. I can't keep shoes on my QH has his feet keep breaking and cracking. Any suggestions would be great. They both are fed alfalfa that has good protein in it and are fed a coat conditioner with protein in it also.
: Thanks.
Wendy,
In some situations, the wet-dry-wet-dry roller coaster will cause feet to crack and split which is why I never recommend standing horses in mud as a 'treatment'
If you havent yet, try Keratex Hoof Hardner along with regular shoeing every 5-6 weeks, fit hot and clipped if necessary....this combination should help since it sounds like the nutrition part of the equation is adequate
hope this helps
