: Following up on my previous post re "toe crack on yearling need advice" After paring the toe and finding puss, daily epsom salt soaks, and iodine gel packing for a week, the colt was still markedly lame. Went back for a second round of radiographs and this time the vet found a fracture on the inside apex of P3. He says prognosis is good, to put a steel shoe with a plate on the bottom to stabalize also put him on SMZ's and isonazid (sp?). Sixty days should do the trick. He also says the abcess weakened the bone which contributed to the fracture.

Sarah,

I have no problem with the shoeing prescription but I would add multiple, say 4, clips to the shoe and would be inclined to have the foot shod in this manner for 6 months or more.....60 days seems too optomistic for complete healing

Perhaps one of the vets will jump in here if I am way off.

Derin
