: : My 12 yr old QH just had her hooves filed . She was not in need of a trim. The farrier spent all of 4 minutes with her. Now three days later we noticed a crack running from the hair line down to the bottom of the hoof. The crack is very fine, but there. What can we do to correct it and could it have been from the farrier. We are new to the horse world and would appreciate any advise. Thanks!
: If he only spent 4 minutes on the horse just filing then the horse apparently didn't need trimming. If the crack runs from the hairline to the bottom then there may have been an injury to the coronary band {hairline}. But if the crack goes up from the ground then there may be a balance problem. I would let the horse grow alittle foot and see what effect you have then you and your farrier can figure out what the problem is. Good Luck! Gary
I would venture to guess that the crack, or split or line in the hoof has been there all the time. You just never notice it before.
If that's not the case and it just happened over night or in a day or two after the farrier trimmed the horse, then I would say you have a very major balance problem or another problem inside the hoof.
A lot of horse have this type of line in the front half of the hoof. Most of the time is found more on the front hooves then the back. If the hoof is balance correctly it should be not a problem.
Just my thinking.
