I bought a 5 year old mare a month ago that was a bit thin (she was only on local grass)and 1 flake of alfalfa so i changed her to orchard and alfalfa.she was on a Livestock blend and I now have her on a Senior feed to help put weight on..she was stalled on mats with shavings and in 3 acre pasture. I dont have mats in her stall-just shavings and her paddock has no grass and can be wet...i noticed these lines in front feet-one is about 2" across, the other foot is about 3/4 around..(they are about half way down the hoof)the farrier thinks she had absesses on both front feet 6-7 months ago and she should have been sore..the previous owner swears shes never been lame and gave me the old farriers name..I believe him...could these be from change in environment and feed change? or could the shavings have dried her feet? my farrior says shes sound but once the lines grow down we will have to watch what happens on the heel..hes assuming she had a stone or something on both front feet.
