: My horse is a four-year-old registered quarter horse mare. The weight is appoximately 1000 lbs. She had a foal April 9, 2002. She is fifteen and a half hands high. Crack has been present in both front hooves since June 2002. Crack is in direct center and goes up to coronet band. She has had round horse shoes with clamps on since October of 2002. She is able to run, no limping. Vet thinks she will be rideable again. She is eating sweet feed (ranch horse) and hay. I am looking for a different farrier. The one I had put a chain around her gums and jerked on her mouth when she flinched in pain while he was shoeing her. I thought it unnecessary and very cruel. What kind of dressings or treatments would you suggest? The crack is not all the way through, but more than just a couple of layers. The cracks are starting to overlapp. She stays in a pasture. She gets put up at night in a stall. Any suggestions would be very helpful and welcome.

: Thank you,

Julie, this is your first horse I assume? A three year old is way too young to be having a foal! How did she get the cracks? Did you have her on a regular 6-8week trimming schedule with a good farrier? She's wearing eggbars with clips????? And she has no problem running and your vet thinks you can ride her again????And she lives on sweet feed? And to top it off your very young ,most likely a little illmannered mare( she should still be a filly)has to be twitched to be shod? Your story is a typical nightmare that we farriers have to put up with! You might need to do some research or get with a trainer and learn alittle about horses. I'm not trying to upset you but you really need some help learning about husbandry concerning horsecare.I hope you save this and after you learn alittle more about horses reread your words and you will see what I mean! Good Luck! Gary
