: My gelding stepped on a nail about 4 weeks ago. I had the vet come out and he dug out a large area around the wound (was in the crack between the frog and the rest of the hoof, in the back third of the hoof). Had tetanus shot, and antibiotics for five days. I soaked and wrapped it for a week. After about three days, he was fine, no lameness at all. Vet said OK to ride after three weeks so farrier packed it and put a pad on to prevent bruising. Rode horse one time, he was fine. One week later, went to ride him again and he was lame. Not all the time, but off and on. So pulled off pad and shoe, and there is a strange pink growth coming out of where the vet dug out the injury. Growth is sore to the touch, and soft. Size of growth is about the size of two peas. Looks like veins or something going through it. Also a bad smell in that area. Vet is coming out to look at it on Monday. I cleaned hoof and put some diluted iodine. Didn't bandage it. Can anyone tell me what this growth might be? It looks like frog material but there are the vein things going through it.
