I am leasing a horse (6-yr old QH in a very nice, well-kept, professional barn) and am seriously considering buying him. Everytime time he is shod, I notice there are red/pink spots on his hooves. I don't know if they are being caused by the ferrier or if they just show up more after shoeing. I don't think he is bumping himself in his stall. Am talking to owner about this, but also trying to find out what's going on myself. Are these bruises, as you all have said? And if they are, are they painful to the horse? Can they cause lameness (he has never been lame as far as anyone knows of his history), or if not lameness, then just affect his way of going? We are riding dressage and noticing a few things, but not sure yet if connected to shoeing or not. Just trying to get an idea about how the bruises happen, how to prevent, how serious an issue they are, etc. Would appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks!
