: : : I am at a lost as to what you mean. Do the x-rays show that 1/3 of the p-3 is missing? Or is 1/3 of the back of the hoof missing. Like the horse may have cut it off? But it is healed.

: : : Yes that is correct, the x-rays do show that 1/3 of the out side of the p-3 is missing, I wish I new how to draw you a picture of what it looks like, totally unusual, he never totally came up lame, we first noticed thier was a problem when he was brought back to us from a prospective buyer, with some swelling. This guy said he came up lame, and that he thought he would just ride it out of him! All I could do was shake my head when I herd that, anyhow the final results from the vet were that he would never be sound agin and he could probably be ridden easy one or twice aweek by a child or smaller adult, but never trailworthy agin. WE never saw any injury and have no idea how this happened, the vet said that the injury was about two to three months old. Thanks for your response.

: If truly one third of the bone is missing, I imagine the lesion is older than 2 or 3 months and may have even been congenital. A venogram would give you a better prognosis. Dr. Redden has removed entire coffin bones from horses and had them return to some degree of usefulness. If he was sound before he went to the potential buyer, he should be able to return to his previous condition, again dependent on venogram results.

Dr. Myers, Is it common to see a horse that is born with a partial coffin bone or a deformed coffin bone? In your experince, what type of affect does that have on the hoof wall, meaning does the hoof wall resemble the shape of the deformity? What would a venogram tell you in a situation like this?
Thanks in advance.
