Not to second guess the vet. However sound like you had a very deep insult to the sole and frog of the hoof. It may have set the horse up for a deep infection or may have cause damaged to the p-3. At this point I would also op for a full set of x-rays of the hoof.
The horse may have also pick up an infection or started a tumor in that region of the hoof.
Just my thinking.
