: : : I AM TO SHOE A HORSE (NEW CUSTOMER) THIS WEEK WHO HAS BEEN RADIOGRAPHED AND DIAGNOSED BY THE VET AS HAVING NAVICULAR. THE HORSE ALSO HAS A BLEEDING QUARTER CRACK THAT TRAVELS VERTICALLY FROM THE CORONET HALFWAY DOWN THE HOOF BUT DOES NOT REACH THE GROUND. IS THERE A CORRELATION BETWEEN NAVICULAR AND QUARTER CRACKS? I PLAN TO USE TFT NAVICULAR SHOES AND QUARTER CRACK STAPLES TO STABILIZE THE CRACK. ANY SUGGESTIONS? MEG

: : I would want to have a look see at the radiographs. I would also take a close look at that quarter crack. Most start at the bottom and work up. Unless an injury at the band.

: I WILL SEE THE RADIOGRAPHS TOMORROW WHEN I GO TO SHOE THE HORSE. I ASKED, AND THIS CRACK GOES FROM CORONET VERTICALLY DOWNWARD ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF...AND IS BLEEDING. DOES NOT SOUND LIKE AN ABCESS THAT HAS BROKEN OPEN AND OWNERS SAID IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE FROM AN INJURY. WILL SEE TOMORROW. MEG

I did the shoeing on Thursday the 26th...went well.Customer did not have radiographs for me to see, but they are 5yrs. old so probably would not help me.Quarter crack was not that bad although about 2" long...it was a true qtr. crack since it went from hairline/coronet down to about an inch from the ground.I trimmed the foot, floated under the crack, applied TFT Navicular shoes, and nailed in 2 hoof staples about 1 1/2 in. apart.I then soaked the foot in epsom salts, and applied some Forshner's hoof packing to the crack even though it was neither bleeding, moving, nor infected. The horse was never lame...but seems more comfortable.Customers are pleased, and time will tell if the hoof grows out uncracked.I took photos, and will post em if I can do the computer thing...will try. Thanks for your advice everybody.
