I just started reading some of the other comments regarding Dr. Strasser. I find it interesting how many people pan Dr. Strasser with out doing their own research. Every horse I trim has gotten better over time. Some have more problems then others and some never seem to miss a beat. If people took the time to actually learn they would see the logic behind ALL of it. I have not found anything that does not make sense. I would like to point out one very important fact. Nailing shoes on a lame horse is the equivilant to buting as circulation is reduced to the point were a horse hooves go numb. This is why the horse goes sound. If your horse cannot go barefoot it has a problem. Plain and simple. That little 1/4" thick steel rim around the horses hoof cannot possibly protect from everything. Yet shod horses seem to fly over all kinds of terrain.

The reason you still get "navicular" pain in a shod horse is that there is still circulation above a certain point so the horse can feel that particular area. When you raise the heels you are reducing the circulation further which is why it works for a while. Eventually the higher blood pressure above the hooves wears away even more bone allowing more blood to flow. So the feeling and thus pain returns.

To Dave, I have run into a person in my area that claimed to be a Strasser trim. I am the only one in my area, with 2 certified trimmers who travel to the area from out of state.

Unfortunatley the fraudulant trimmers do more harm than good which is then blamed on Dr. Strasser. If a person is certified their name will be on the Strasser web site.

: : As to the navicular question, yes, we do not see it as a disease but as a syndrome caused by contracted heels, high heels and long bars levered into the hoof by the former. Once the bars are brought back to normal height and the inflamation subsides the horse is no longer in pain.

: : : I am the Strasser Trimmer. This horse has rotation with seperation(founder), is extremely contracted and has pretty bad joint adaption. He is sore after each trim and needs to be trimmed at least every two weeks, but as meg says the owner has trouble paying. I am not "laming" this horse he has a great many problems. Most of the horses I trim are doing just fine and are fully usable. A few, like this one, have severe problems. It can take a long time to rehab a horse like this, and even longer when the owner is not willing to have the horse trimmed often enough. This owner has 2 other horses, one foundered 5 yrs ago and is doing so so, and the other is 5 and has no problems to speak of.

: : : : : Good grief - whomever is interested in the Strasser Method or interested in being nasty about it just go to a clinic and find out for yourself - she will be in NJ this month I believe, and CA - Surf around the SHP links at www.thehorseshoof.com and look at some of the before and afters including the ones in the UK

: : : : : : : : : : : Those of you who are familiar with the Strasser Method, please enlighten me. Is it part of the Strasser thinking to tell people that there is no such thing as Navicular Disease? And is it reccommended that these horses (according to the Strasser folk, the horses have problems cuz of shoeing) and others they do be trimmed so that they are walking on their soles...especially at the toe and white line? And how long does their "adjustment period" take? I am housesitting for some horses that are dead lame and on daily asparin therapy because of this new and wonderful type of trimming. It's hard for me to see. I gave the lady away because she had problems paying me, but I hate seeing her horses hobble around. Don't know that I'll get involved, but I was just curious about the Strasser trims I saw firsthand. I know I am opening a can of worms....but please comment. Converts and traditionalists alike. Bring it on.

: : : : : : : : : : Heir Strasser's methods border or is animal abuse. The DVM behind her name covers her in some cases. Feed the affected horses their "asprins" and move on, you can't save all the horses, especially when they have idiots for owners.

: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : As was once pointedly pointed out to me, it should be Frau rather than Herr and may be abbreviated as "F" or "H" infront of the name. F for the female gender, H for the male gender.

: : : : : : : : : F. Strasser's appellation(DVM) was granted in Germany. While she is entitled to use it while in America, I do not believe that she is allowed to practice veterinary medicine here without first becoming accredited by our standards(help me out here Dr. Myers).

: : : : : : : : : There has been much discussion here and elsewhere in cyberspace about F. Strasser, the cult of Strasserites and the thoroughly repudiated, rejected and debunked Strasser Protocol as it relates to hoof care. Interestingly enough, it was I who coined the phrase "Strasser Protocol", and I did so as a sarcastic, cynical, derogatory term. It was, and remains an oxymoron. However, the cult acolytes were and are unable to recognize it as such and have, on several occasions, used the term to describe their barbarity. It always brings a smile to my face when they do so.

: : : : : : : : : I suggest you do a keyword search of the archives on this site. Type in "Strasser" and you will get an eyeful.

: : : : : : : : : There are also several Strasser groups active in Yahoo groups. Generally speaking, I and others have been banned from these groups. Mostly these are feel good, give me positive strokes about being a hoof butcher kind of groups, and I am quite proud to know that they don't want me either reading the garbage they spew, or participating as a member of their list.

: : : : : : : : : There are many reasons people gravitated to Strasser's hucksterism. As P.T. Barnum observed, "there's a sucker born every minute..."

: : : : : : : : : Rick

: : : : : : : : While she cannot actively practice veternary medicine in the US, she can (unfortunately) expound her views on hoof care as much as she like since it is not in the realm of veterinary medicine.

: : : : : : : : The rest of P. T. Barnum ".....and two to take him." :)

: : : : : : : : M. W. Myers, D.V.M.

: : : : : : : Thanks all....I may check out the site just to be informed about it all. This is just the first living (for now) horse I have ever seen who has been unfortunate enough to be trimmed (butchered) this way. I left the Strasser gal who lamed the horse a message informing her of his lameness. She left me one in return saying that "the horse will be o.k....he's going to be sore every time I trim him till he heals. And he really should be trimmed every TWO WEEKS! Don't panic...." It will be interesting to see what the owner has to say when she comes home from her cruise to a lame horse. I'm trying to NOT get involved since it's a customer I discarded anyway...but it's hard to see such a sweet horse in pain because of human stupidity. This does remind me how important our work is tho....and I wonder if the owner remembers that that same horse was totally sound when I was nailing on those "evil" things known as horseshoes. Oh well.

: : : : : :
: : : : : : Meg,
: : : : : : I understand Strauser was banned from pracice in Great Briton. Too many horses in the process of being cured assuming room tempreture.
: : : : : : How can anyone think like that person who trimmed that horse? I guess that's why folks end up in cults and drink the kool-aid.
: : : : : : Bill

: : : : This may be far out in left field but I do beleave there is some truth to this. Here is the word on the streets of not only USA, but in manny other countries. Strasser has hidden motives, she plans on world abombanation through means of taking over the horse world one trim at a time. By turning the horse owners aginst the farriers, with room for grouth funded by her regiem. she will unthrown Bill Gates and be able to buy out the media. She will gain in power by subliminal messages and soon have an armie of Strasserites tring to domanate the world.

: : : : I spent all night making a double edged sword out of old rasps and those evil horse shoes. Im scared and rightly so. At the very least I can use the sword to trim a foot using the strasser method.
: : : : Hail Strasser!

:
: I was very politely e-mailed by a "Strasser Certified Trimmer" and told that apparently the "trimmer" that I observed was not a "Strasser Certified Trimmer" This person that e-mailed me is obviously the only one in Ohio and a few surrounding states. Anyway I was told I should "pony up" and tell everyone here that the person I observed was not a "Strasser Certified Trimmer" So there it is. But I don't recall stating that the person I watched was certified by Strasser, she just claimed to be a Strasser Trimmer. Anyway, I would hate to be blamed for ruining the good name of the Strasser Certified Trimmers by categorizing this particular person as one and therefore State that "The Person I Observed Trimming A Horse Must Not Have Been A Strasser Certified Trimmer, I apologize for any hurt or anguish this may have caused to anyone." Thank you for your support.
