: : : I do the veterinary work for the US Park Police and there needs to be some serious changes in their shoeing.
: : : My question is what sort of material would wear well enough on pavement with reasonable traction for these horses.
: : : Currently they wear a steel shoe with borium calks at the toes and heels. They wear out a set of shoes approximately every six weeks.
: : : All input would be appreciated with experience in this area of materials.

: : The Minneapolis mounted patrol changed over to the NBS polysteel with very good results they are finding good traction and comfort for the horses via the NB trim and appilcation of them They use these horses are the lakes and rivers around both of the cities and quite impressed with the traction in not so good conditions

: The Oakland CA Police mounted use Equithitics "Sneakers" on the front feet and steel with borium on the hinds. The Sneakers wear incredibly well on pavement, have good traction ,and usually can reset once, BUT can be very slick on grass. (hence the borium on the hind feet).

: PS a tip....if you use sneakers on the front feet, grind off the clips and apply the shoes backward for better breakover because the front of the shoes are round, designed for perimeter fit, but rear of the shoe is squared.

the Minneapolis police dept. uses shoes from Hoof-it. both marathon composite and hoof-it composite
