There is a tremendous amount of care that needs to take place on the behalf of this horse. And in my opinion, neglect through turn out is not in the best interest of the animal.
A lot can be done to rehabilitate the injury site and still leave the horse with some down time.
I never had any real luck with wedging a bowed or strained tendon. It creates a smaller ground surface, puts the center of gravity further rearward, hence putting ore pressure on the tendons and supporting ligaments.
Keep the horse at his skeletal conformation values and give him as much caudal support as he'll allow.... ease his break over, hope for the best.
But interim soft tissue rehab is essential to successful recovery. Don't let anyone fool you otherwise.
