: I've got a vet referral on a jennet w/ Wld. Shes got it pretty good on one hoof and a toe resection is in order to remove affected material. Question... I'm going to apply a heartbar to support the bone column but, as the toe is going to be removed around through the quarters, should I use an open toe heartbar or a full toe heartbar. Thanks

With that much hoof wall attachment gone due to the WLD, the rest of the wall and laminae could be easily be overloaded. Even a heartbar shoe places undue load on the remaining wall. The results could be exessive flaring of the quarters or unsoundness due to laminae stress. My suggestion is to reduce the load on the wall. Place the load on the sole.

This can be done with a commercial sole support system if the animal is required to work or must be on hard ground. The simplest approach would be to trim the hoof wall relatively short all around. Trim so that the ground surface of P3 is parallel with the ground. Do not trim away any sole callous, bars or frog. When the hoof is standing on soft ground, most of the weight bearing contact is now on the sole, bars and frog. It is important to have the animal turned out on soft dry ground. Retrim at 4 week intervals.
