: : : I've got a vet referral on a jennet w/ Wld. Shes got it pretty good on one hoof and a toe resection is in order to remove affected material. Question... I'm going to apply a heartbar to support the bone column but, as the toe is going to be removed around through the quarters, should I use an open toe heartbar or a full toe heartbar. Thanks

: : One of the main problems I see in donkeys and mules is that people try to trim them like a horse. This results in too much tension being placed on the anterior wall and predisposes to wall separation and its resultant problems.

: : A correct "mule trim" may be all that is needed along with the resection to alleviate the problem. She may not need shoes at all.

: Gentlemen,
: I appreciate the responses I agree with the comment re: the "horse trim" and this donkey is an example of that type of trimming. The problem I have is that the hoof wall is seriously detached across the toe 7/8 of the way to the coronary band with patches of attached hoof wall here and there. This is why I was concerned about support for the bone column. Ray?
: Thanks

Mike,

I might use a wide web shoe and iodine inpregnated patch in that area of the hoof.

Ray
