On 11/28/98 I posted that I was going to treat a case of WLD on a standardbred (trotter) that the owner wanted to continue racing. To facilitate his request I had to come up with an idea so the horse didn't have any down time. Well, it worked and we have healthy growth to the ground surface (the horse is shod)and no signs of problems.
Using a dental pick, I cleaned out the cavity (3/4 of the hoof wall on the lateral wall) and measured the depth . Then I packed the cavity with "Hoof-Phelt", covered the opening with Keratex putty, and set a shoe. Then measured the outside of the wall to the top of the cavity and Dremeled a hole through the wall to the felt. This allowed the owner to fill the void with "Hoof Freeze", saturating the felt. When I reset, I changed the felt and putty. Ten months later, a healthy hoof ! I realize this is only a single case but,Hey, it worked for this horse.
