: : : Twelve year old Quarter Horse...pleasure /trail use...slightly overweight(3-500#)...deformed right front foot(from injury 10 yrs. ago)...sound for past 3 yrs. When removing right hind shoe for trim (12-29-01) noticed a slight widening in the white line of the toe. There is a 1 1/2" horizontal crack in the center of the toe(from an abcess that ruptured just below the coronary band 6 mos. ago). I returned to reset and trim on 2-02-02. The White line is now 7/16' thick at the toe, no other symptoms in the other feet. Vet informed, she wants to do blood work (for thyroid), owner not to sure about 'useless vet bills' (not my opion). How would you treat this if it was your client (horse) and customer (owner)? Right now I have squared the toe, left barefoot to just wait and see! Thanks in advance for your input, Jim.
: : It could be just from the injury that is causing the seperation. Or it could be a slight case of laminitis. Or it could be mechinical seperation due to stress on the toe.
: : I would just trim down to the life sole plane put a bevel edge on the hoof. I don't know that I would square the toe. You might be changing the normal breakover doing this and causing additional stresses.
: : Just my thinking.

: Ray, I squared and rasped the toe at a 45 degree angle to speed up break over thinking this would give some relief to the hoofwall. I thought this would lessen the amount of time pressure would be applied to the hoofwall....being a hind foot used for propulsion to push the horse forward (usually with the toe). By squaring the toe would it not allow the toe relief by causing the foot to go into flight sooner, and rasping a 45 degree angle lessen the traction and pressure of the pull between the wall and sensitive lamina which could widen the white line ? If my thinking on this is not correct please inform me. Thanks , Jim.
Yes, but it was not clear in your first post.
