Twelve year old Quarter Horse...pleasure /trail use...slightly overweight(3-500#)...deformed right front foot(from injury 10 yrs. ago)...sound for past 3 yrs. When removing right hind shoe for trim (12-29-01) noticed a slight widening in the white line of the toe. There is a 1 1/2" horizontal crack in the center of the toe(from an abcess that ruptured just below the coronary band 6 mos. ago). I returned to reset and trim on 2-02-02. The White line is now 7/16' thick at the toe, no other symptoms in the other feet. Vet informed, she wants to do blood work (for thyroid), owner not to sure about 'useless vet bills' (not my opion). How would you treat this if it was your client (horse) and customer (owner)? Right now I have squared the toe, left barefoot to just wait and see! Thanks in advance for your input, Jim.
