: : Have a mare that has been in my care over a year now. No problems during that time. Hooves are in better condition, p-1, p-2, p-3 are in alinement. Just a bit of droped sole. Mare was moving a long nice, collecting and extending better then when she first came to our barn over a year ago. She has been barehooved all that time. Owner tried breeding her last year but she did not settle, but no problems with the hooves while at the breeders last year. Different breeder this year.
: : Problem:
: : Mare was sent out a month ago for breeding. She had been trimmed about four weeks before. No problems witn in that four weeks after trimming. She then abcess two weeks ago. Abcess again this week at the breeders. I have not seen the mare yet.
: : They tell us that the feed, hay and pasture or about the same as at our place. Any ideas as to what mybe causing these abcesses?
: : Their vet is suggesting an open toe egg-bar shoe with full pads. I don't think that I should be putting full pads on the mare at this time. Reason, in case she abcesses again. Will suggest hospital plate. Any ideas?

: Ray, is the pasture there really wet?
Good footing just about correct, good drainage. Sandy Loam.
Or was your pasture wet andthe feet dried out quickly at the breeders?
about the same.
Is the mare a possible low grade cushings (no cortisol rythm - high insulin) ?
Will ask them to check this.
That would be the chronically cresty type but may still have a great shiny hair coat and no other clasic 'cushings' signs. (Those horses often get a series of abscesses just before they founder again)
: Just some thoughts. As forthe shoeing, I would rather see her in styrofoam, but if the breeders don't want to deal with the maintainance of that, then I side with you on the hospital plate..you could fit some good support material (dental impresion material) in the rear half of the foot under the plate, and place an absorbant soft material over any abscesses in the front of the sole. Just some thoughts. I certainly would get this mare tested by BET labs just as a precaution. Patty
Sounds good on the shoeing.
