Tookie

Welcome to my spot in the Farrier and Hoofcare Resource Center. I'm the Co-Resident Veterinarian, M. W. “Tookie” Myers, D.V.M.

My thirty five years in the equine industry, encompassing showing, training, shoeing, and rendering veterinary services to horses, provides a solid background to assist you in a variety of disciplines. I've been a veterinarian for 22 years, graduating from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. Prior to entering veterinary school I trained and showed American Saddlebred Horses and apprenticed under our stables trainer and farrier. I also had occasion to take my training and handling skills and work with Quarter horses, Tennessee Walking Horses, Arabians and more. This gives me a unique perspective on the industry.

I met my wife and we married in 1982. She was an all-breed trainer and all-discipline riding instructor. We had a breeding program, creating some outstanding Quarter Horses and Saddlebreds for the industry. We also had a grand time showing and training with students, remembering and using our principles for years to come. Unfortunately, we tend to be a bit ahead of the times and the industry wasn’t ready for the well mannered, “thinking man’” type horse we were turning out. We focussed our attention on the veterinary practice and have grown into a well known entity across the country, assisting people in maintaining the soundness of their horses and correcting problems that baffle the “experts”.

My wife endeavors to keep me on track and looking for solutions to insoluble problems. She has a great eye for balance and assists me continually. Her knowledge of horse behavior and her training experience based on the basics of behavior and proper balance and movement have been an invaluable asset to me.

My veterinary practice keeps me quite busy since I'm very client oriented. I remember how I liked to be treated when I had horses (and other pets), so I don’t make my clients wait two or more weeks to see me. This can cause some twelve to fourteen hour days at times, so everyone has their situation addressed in a timely manner. I view myself as a veterinarian, I do not go to a veterinary job. I love being a veterinarian and am “on call” 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Even when I'm out of town on seminars, I handle calls back at the office through the day. In actuality, I am not an “equine expert” as I treat all species of animals. I consult on companion animals, food animals, equines, zoo animals, wildlife, laboratory animals, reptiles, birds, and fish. I lecture on equine issues in a variety of disciplines from hoof problems to animal abuse. Additionally, I lecture on situations in all of the above disciplines as well.

I've served on the board of directors of The American Horse Protection Association for ten years and remain as a consulting veterinarian for them. I've managed horse shows, judged shows, been on the executive boards of horse organizations, and remain actively involved in many facets of the industry.

We thoroughly enjoy helping people realize they can fully enjoy horses that have been “written off” by other veterinarians and farriers. We look at many cases through new perspectives and treat each as an individual while continuing to utilize the same basic principles that anyone can apply successfully – correct breakover, phalangeal lever alignment, adequate limb support, and proper medial to lateral balance.
