The staff and large animal veterinarians of Deepwood Veterinary Clinic are excited to present our first Equine Facility Event and would like any and all to attend. Of course, a little different for a veterinary clinic, as this Event is recognizing farriery as a very important aspect of equine veterinary medicine. We all know and utilize our personal farrier, but do we really know what farriers are all about. What is your farrier’s knowledge base, their boundaries of care and what should owners, riders and trainers expect from their farrier. As well as, what are the owner’s and trainer’s responsibilities to the farrier.
At the same time, we also all utilize our veterinarians, local and when needed, those remote and/or specialists. What is your veterinarian’s interest and knowledge of the equine digit, you need to know. “No hoof – No horse” we have all heard this statement; some of us have learned this statement’s truth.
My intent is to offer some insight to the needs of teamwork in raising the bar for the equine digit, from the viewpoint of the veterinarian, the farrier and the owners and trainers. I hope in the months to follow, this blog will approach and offer some thoughts on the subject of the equine digit. I look forward to your assistance with my blog by submitting your questions and comments.

The fall season of doings at Heartland Horseshoeing School is coming fast. I had an unfortunate call this weekend from Bob Marshall. He has had to cancel his upcoming clinic for undisclosed reasons. It was a real disappointment to me and those that had already signed up.
Just a quick note about the upcoming course and clinic schedule. I am offering a 3 day course to help people with the AWCF Exam. It will be followed immediately by a 2 day Bob Marshal Clinic.
The dates are Sept. 30th, Oct. 1st and 2nd for my course, and Oct. 3rd and 4th for Bob's clinic. Either one of these will cost $450.00, or you can attend both for $800.00.
While these classes are being specially designed to help the farriers taking the course at HHS in November, they are open to any farrier that wants to take them, regardless of whether you are taking the exam or not. Enrollment is limited, so get in touch with me soon if you are wanting to come.
In addition to that, we are having an AFA Certification Prep Course from Oct. 12th through the 16th. It will be followed by an AFA Certification at the school on Oct. 16th and 17th.
It seems like it has been forever since I blogged. I guess it has been quite a while. There are a couple of reasons. First, the school is on break, so there is nothing new to report there. Second, we have been on the road constantly rodeoing since the 11th or 12th of July. Prior to that, we had just got back from Calgary. Both Cody and Jacquelyn competed at the International Finals Youth Rodeo in Shawnee, OK. Jacquelyn roped really well, and ended up tied for 2oth and 21st I think. Cody did not have a good rodeo for the most part, but did have one good calf-roping run. Bucked off his bulls, and missed the steer-wrestling steers.
Today was the longest of the 4 days of competition. This morning we had to make a Caulk & Feather and a Plain Stamped Front with toe clip and brazed on jar caulks in 40 minutes. That was followed by an Eagle Eye class where we had 25 minutes to make a heart-bar. This afternoon we had the 4-man draft class. My team members were, Dr. Mike Miller from Alabama, Alexi Guiterrez from Cuba (by way of Florida), Cody Gregory and myself. This is the same team that we had last year. You can see last years picture on the front page of www.heartlandhorseshoeing.com, or you can see current Calgary pictures at forgeandfarrier.co.uk. Cody and I are the only ones in cowboy hats.
