A learning tape and study guide for farriers-to-be and horse owners. $150 (incl. S&H) For order information call 815-653-2382.
I've viewed many tapes that were supposed to be used by aspiring farriers and horse owners to learn how to trim their horse's hooves. This tape is one of the best, if not the best, I've ever seen. Starting with the very basics, including subjects such as safety around the horse, the tape takes you step by step through evaluating the horse while in motion, detailed hoof anatomy, evaluating the condition of the hooves, the tools needed, and how to trim the hooves.
Every step is covered thoroughly and in a comprehensive manner. No detail is too small to point out. And I found the repetition to be very useful for reinforcement of the important items. The tape, especially when used in conjunction with the study guide, is a very effective learning tool.
Although the $150 price may seem a bit steep, it really isn't. For the aspiring farrier-to-be, this tape will provide the opportunity to learn and try out the basics before investing lots of time and potentially thousands of dollars at a farriers school. (This tape is NOT meant to substitute for a farrier school. Do not take the previous comment to mean that.) If, after learning what's on the tape and in the study guide, the potential farrier still has the desire to make farriery a career, then that person now has a good foundation from which to start.
For the horse owner who desires to trim their own horse, this tape will make an excellent investment. After trimming just 6 or 7 horses, the cost of the tape will be earned back.
Whether you are purchasing the tape because you are a potential farrier who wants to try it out, or a horse owner looking to save money, I urge everyone purchasing the tape to take its advice and try to locate a farrier to help you along while you learn. No matter how comprehensive the tape or study guide is, there's no substitute for an experienced farrier looking over your shoulder the first few times you trim the hooves.
