Follow-up on the Clinic at Rich Petersen's
A few months ago, in this newsletter there was a Thank
You to several MEFA members for their willingness to help put on a Clinic
at Rich Petersen's house on June 26, which turned out to be very good.
This is an update on the Paint mare that we spent so
much time on. The mare has what was diagnosed at that time as a true diagonal
imbalance in the front. She did come sound two days after the clinic.
I started early trying to convince Randy Luikart to come back up in six
weeks to reset her, since he did the work on her front. After about 5
weeks the mare started to become uncomfortable. By 7 weeks she was lame
on the right front. Randy agreed to come and do the reset on August 25th.
We spent a lot of time on the left front. The foot was
diagonally trimmed by removing outside heel and inside toe. Allowing the
hoof capsule to rotate back in line with the axis of the leg. The right
front is the one that had the leather pad on. We put the pad back on,
hoping the feet will do as well during this period as they did during
the last period. Be then there is a good chance that the feet will be
close enough that the leather pad will not be needed. After this reset
the mare was moving more freely.
My personal thanks to all the "old farts" for
coming to the clinic. Hopefully everyone gained something from all the
experience that was there. My personal thanks to Randy taking the time
to come back up and reset the mare.

ATTENTION FARRIERS AND BLACKSMITHS
To anyone who burns coal: We have arranged a source of very good West
Virginia coal. Thanks to the diligence of several people we have found
a source and made arrangements for Thompson Bros. Mining Co. to carry
it for us. This is POCAHONTAS #2, the best blacksmiths
coal in Ohio right now! Believe me I've looked. Thompson Bros. is located
in New Springfield Ohio, to contact call 330-549-3979 and let them know
you heard it through the farriers association.
MEFA would like to welcome Chris Kirk to the Unites
States. Chris is the exchange farrier from Whales, and will be spending
time with several members of the association over the summer.
