President's Letter
The Buckeye Ranch sponsored Dr. Olin Balch DVM, and Mr.
Randy Luikart CJF the 24-25 of January. Those who braved the weather and
were able to attend had a very intense weekend. Olin shared with us the
information he gathered for his thesis as well as studies he has done
with other great minds in the field of equine locomotion like Dr. Hilary
Clayton. From run under heels and length of toe grab being a possible
risk factor for catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries in racehorses. To
the slow motion vidieos and computer analysis done on hoof length, angle
changes, shoe weight and their effect on the flight pattern of the foot.
Mr. Luikarts Center of mass lectures tied in perfectly with Dr. Balchs
studies. Mr. Luikart also spent time on the four lengths of feet; too
short, supportive, mechanical length to balance with fetlock, and too
long. Plus a compilation of video including sound and unsound horses of
many different disciplines and breeds that he has gathered over his thirty
five plus years of practice.
