The World Farriers Association

Welcome to the home page of the World Farriers Association. You may be asking, "With all of the state, local, and even national farriers associations, why do we need a World Farriers Association?" Let us tell you why:

The hoofed animal is one of God's grandest creations. As beasts of burden, objects of art and interest, sports participants and athletes, companions and friends, these animals fulfill a fancy and meet a basic need of humans. The dumb animal enjoys no choice of its life of servitude, but is left to the chance of nature or the choice of humankind. Except in the most remote of natural settings, these hoofed animals are inextricably linked to, or influenced by human beings.

With a higher order of intelligence and societal evolution, humans have a basic obligation to care for the animals they use and enjoy. Horses of today enjoy value and importance in almost all civilizations around the world. Asses, donkeys, mules and horses, and all other species and hybrids of single-hoofed creatures deserve and require competent, periodic care. Cloven-hoofed animals fill many of the same roles as the single-hoofed animals, and deserve the same attention and skilled care. Whether wild, domiciled in zoos or parks, or domesticated, these animals in service to humans are the focus of the World Farriers Association.

The WFA was started in 1984, and it is dedicated to their well-being. If the charge to care for them correctly is abdicated, civilization's debt to these creatures of service and beauty will become due. The World Farriers Association works unceasingly to provide the highest standards of care to each and every one.

How do we accomplish this goal?

  1. Promote the exchange of information and the education of farriers worldwide.
  2. Provide expert advice and counsel on farriery matters to the farrier and veterinary professions, and to the horse industry.
  3. Foster and promote liaison between the farriery and veterinary professions.
  4. Assist interested parties in founding and running farrier associations, organizations, or societies, and provide assistance to fledgling organizations through an adoption scheme.
  5. Develop educational standards in farriery for students instructors, and schools.
  6. Foster exchange of farriers and apprentices.
  7. Encourage international trade of materials used by and available to farriers, especially in developing countries.
  8. Encourage international farriery competitions for all skill levels.
  9. Assist and participate in footcare and farriery related research.
  10. Develop and implement standards for terminology, processes, procedures, and titling for competitions, publications, and other similar activities.
